Kryptec Helps John Laing Homes Solve Remote Access Issue
John Laing Homes was named Professional Builder magazine’s “2004 Builder of the Year.” The national award, created in 1966, recognizes one homebuilder each year for excellence in the industry in several areas, including innovative designs, marketing, and customer service. One of the top privately held homebuilders in the nation, the company ranks 28th on Professional Builder magazine's list of the top 400 homebuilders. The company, based in Newport Beach, California, concentrates its homebuilding efforts in California and Colorado.
Customer Challenge: Secure Remote Access to Multiple Applications
John Laing Homes maintains a headquarters in Newport Beach, CA, as well as over 50 sales offices and multiple construction sites throughout the Southwestern United States. Providing employee access to backend resources outside the headquarters environment has been hobbled by the limitations of legacy Virtual Private Network (VPN) solutions. The company has not been able to conveniently provide secure remote access to Outlook Web Access (OWA) or BuilderSuite, a web based home building sales and administration application, without opening up the entire network via VPN or exposing Microsoft resources directly to the Internet.
OWA was hosted at different data centers for different offices, forcing employees in each data center to go to separate URLs for access. Providing remote access to these servers entailed punching holes in firewalls at each location along with moving the OWA servers into a DMZ. Similarly, providing access to BuilderSuite would require moving that server into a DMZ. Because BuilderSuite was not created with security as a main focus, granting remote access to one user would require granting access to all users. In addition, BuilderSuite has custom java code that has made traditional SSL VPN access impossible. Finally, the complexity of deploying, protecting, and training employees to access resources via legacy VPN solutions made the project overly costly and unattractive.
Still, John Laing Homes wanted to provide all employees universal access to resources. They saw clearly the benefits of improved productivity at sales offices and construction sites. At sales offices, web based sales applications could speed the processing of new home sales. At construction sites, the ability to exchange large, complex engineering documents could accelerate the building process, but they couldn't get there with existing solutions.
Caymas Solution:
John Laing Homes leveraged the assistance of their trusted network security advisor, Kryptec.Net, an Information Security Consulting firm, who provides security auditing, management and implementation in the Southwest Region and Caymas Authorized Partners. Kryptec.Net introduced the company to the Caymas 318 Identity-Based NAC appliance. The Caymas appliance provides SSL VPN remote access, as well as ultra secure extranets and internal network access control, with access policy tied to the unique identities of users, devices and resources. With a Caymas appliance John Laing Homes could leverage their Active Directory identity store, and create a specific access policy for each user and group, with constant monitoring of all user behavior and resource activity. Caymas’ flexibility allows it to be a single appliance for secure access, with policy tied to the users’ identity.
With Kryptec.Net’s help, John Laing Homes conducted a field trial with the Caymas 318, and found that the solution immediately supported all the company’s critical applications, with integrated application layer security, and more thorough monitoring and logging of behavior than they had before.
Because the Caymas appliance maintains a constant awareness of the identities of users, John Laing employees are able to log into the main OWA server, and be redirected to the appropriate OWA server for that employee. In addition, all Caymas appliances feature Caymas Web Relay, a unique technology that provides instant secure access to any web application including BuilderSuite, regardless of any custom Java or other code running on the application. Also attractive to John Laing Homes was the fact that the Caymas product required virtually no user re-training to access resources remotely. The user need only open the Caymas Launchpad, and click on the desired application. The Launchpad lists only those applications a user is entitled to use, and creates the secure connection immediately upon the access request. The risk of malicious or accidental misuse is eliminated.
After the successful field trial, John Laing Homes purchased the Caymas product and eventually used it to provide access privileges to over 800 company employees. The fact that the product could easily link to an existing Active Directory store made the process simple and easy. Even better for the IT staff, the employees have been extremely pleased with the increased access to applications from any location, and the ease of use of the solution. In addition, the company is also able to offer access to specific resources for business partners such as advertisers and mortgage companies, who the company transacts with on a daily basis. Being able to perform transactions online, with the confidence that partners can’t access any restricted content, has accelerated operational performance and improved customer satisfaction.
